Somewhere between the third and fourth hour of a Discord argument about throat hit, someone always drops the phrase "the science is settled." It never is. And honestly? That might be the whole point.

If you've spent any meaningful time in vape communities — whether that's subreddits, Facebook groups, or the comment sections of YouTube build guides — you already know the PG/VG ratio debate is basically the vaping world's version of the console wars. It's loud, it's tribal, and it has been going on long enough that entire meme formats have been built around it. But underneath all the noise, there's a genuinely interesting technical conversation happening. One that's quietly shaped how manufacturers formulate juice, how hardware gets designed, and how hobbyists think about their gear.

So let's actually dig into it.

What We're Even Arguing About

For the uninitiated: e-liquid is built on a base of two carrier liquids — propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). PG is thinner, carries flavor more efficiently, and produces that satisfying throat hit that mimics the sensation of smoking. VG is thicker, slightly sweet, and generates those massive, pillowy clouds that made competitive vaping a thing. Most commercial e-liquids blend the two in varying ratios — commonly 50/50, 70/30 VG-heavy, or max VG formulations that sit at 80/20 or higher.

Simple enough, right? Except the community has spent years arguing about virtually every implication of that blend. Flavor accuracy. Coil longevity. Wicking speed. Nicotine delivery efficiency. Device compatibility. Whether high-VG juice is "ruining" flavor culture. Whether high-PG juice is a relic that should've died with first-gen cigalikes. The list goes on.

"It maps almost perfectly onto the emulation format wars," says Marcus T., a hobbyist builder from Portland who's been mixing his own juice since 2015. "You've got your purists on both sides, you've got the people who just want it to work, and you've got a small group of people who've actually read the documentation and are being ignored by everyone else."

That last group — the people who've actually read the documentation — tends to have the most nuanced take.

What the Chemistry Actually Supports

Here's where it gets interesting. PG's reputation as the superior flavor carrier isn't myth — it genuinely does a better job of binding to and suspending flavor compounds, particularly water-soluble ones. Dr. Sarah Engel, a food scientist who consults for several independent e-liquid manufacturers, explains it this way: "Propylene glycol has a lower viscosity and higher polarity than VG, which means flavor molecules disperse more evenly through the liquid. When you heat that, you get a more consistent and accurate flavor release."

But VG isn't just a cloud machine. Its higher viscosity means it retains heat differently, which affects vapor temperature and density in ways that some flavor profiles — particularly creams, custards, and tobacco blends — actually benefit from. "There are flavors that genuinely read better in a high-VG base," Engel adds. "It's not just aesthetics. The mouthfeel and temperature profile change the perception of the flavor."

So both camps have legitimate scientific ground to stand on. Which, predictably, makes the argument worse.

The Hardware Angle Nobody Talks About Enough

One dimension of the PG/VG debate that gets underplayed in community discussions is hardware compatibility. High-VG juice is notoriously hard on coils and wicking material — the thick consistency means cotton saturates more slowly, which leads to dry hits if you're chain vaping or using a device with tight wicking channels. Sub-ohm tanks and rebuildable atomizers with wider juice flow ports were partly developed in response to the rise of max-VG formulations.

Conversely, high-PG juice can be too thin for certain mesh coil designs, leading to leaking and flooding issues. Device manufacturers have essentially had to design around a moving target as the community's ratio preferences have shifted over the years.

Jordan Kessler, a product developer at a mid-sized US hardware brand who asked us not to name his employer, put it bluntly: "The ratio wars absolutely influence hardware design. When 70/30 VG-heavy became the dominant preference in the enthusiast market, we redesigned our wicking geometry. It's not something we advertise, but the community's preferences are baked into the spec sheet."

That's actually a meaningful data point. The argument isn't just happening in comment sections — it's feeding back into product development in real ways.

The Tribal Problem

Of course, none of this means the discourse is always productive. Like any sufficiently passionate geek community, the PG/VG debate has its fair share of bad-faith arguments, confirmation bias, and identity politics masquerading as technical analysis. The "max VG or you're not a real cloud chaser" crowd is just as exhausting as the "anything above 50/50 VG is for people who don't actually care about flavor" contingent.

Marisa Chen, who runs a well-followed vape review channel and has moderated several online vape communities, sees the pattern clearly. "It's the same thing you see in audio communities arguing about lossless formats, or PC builders arguing about AMD versus Intel. The technical facts exist, but they get weaponized for identity. People aren't just arguing about chemistry — they're arguing about what kind of vaper they are."

That's a fair critique. But Chen also thinks the tribalism has an upside. "Those communities, even the toxic ones, generate an enormous amount of real-world testing data. People are doing hundreds of informal experiments and reporting back. It's messy, but it's not nothing."

Why the Argument Is Actually Worth Having

Here's the case for optimism: the PG/VG debate, for all its heat, has produced a more technically literate vape community than almost any other hobby subculture. Walk into a serious vape shop or drop into a mixer's forum and you'll find people casually discussing ester formation, flash points, and hygroscopic properties. That's not normal hobbyist behavior. That's enthusiast culture doing what it does best — taking a niche technical subject and going absolutely feral with it.

The debate has also pushed manufacturers toward more transparency. Five years ago, many commercial e-liquids didn't even list their PG/VG ratios on the label. Community pressure — driven in no small part by the ongoing argument about why ratios matter — changed that. You can now find ratio information on virtually every reputable US e-liquid brand's packaging or website.

Is the argument settled? Absolutely not. Will it ever be? Probably not, because personal preference is a real variable that no amount of chemistry can fully override. What works in a 0.15-ohm mesh build for a cloud chaser in Denver is genuinely different from what works in a pod system for someone who just wants a clean nicotine hit on a lunch break.

But that's kind of the point. The best geek culture arguments aren't the ones that end — they're the ones that keep generating new questions. And if the PG/VG wars keep pushing both hardware and formulation forward, maybe the Discord thread never needs to close.

Just maybe turn down the caps lock a little.
